A beautiful matching pair of vintage 1977 hand-painted ceramic wall plates depicting historic scenes of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Each approximately 7-inch plate features a different Santo Domingo architectural scene rendered by hand with expressive black linework and warm, earthy color. One depicts Puerta del Conde, while the other is labeled Paseos de los Curas, Sto. Dgo., R.D.
What makes this pair especially appealing is that both pieces are individually artist signed and dated 1977. The Puerta del Conde plate is signed “Contreras ’77,” while the Paseos de los Curas plate is signed “Vicente ’77.”
Both plates bear the Enceramica del Sol maker’s mark on the reverse along with “Pintado a Mano,” indicating that they were painted by hand. Original-style hanging cords are attached to the backs for wall display.
With their matching size, shared maker, identical 1977 date, complementary Santo Domingo subjects, and signatures from two different artists, these plates make a wonderful companion pair. Condition:
Good vintage condition with overall glaze crazing consistent with age. There is age-related surface wear, discoloration and variation to the glaze, including around the rims and backs. The hand-painted decoration also shows the natural variations expected of individually painted pieces. Please review all photos closely, including the detailed images of the surfaces, edges, signatures and maker’s mark, as they are an important part of the condition description.
