This original vintage double-sided map features Savage River State Forest (Map 66) on one side and Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area (Map 65) on the other, printed in 1966 as part of a comprehensive regional planning study of the Potomac Valley.

The Savage River State Forest side highlights western Maryland along the Pennsylvania and West Virginia borders, centered on the Savage River corridor. Key features include Big Run Recreation Area, New Germany Recreation Area, the existing Savage Reservoir, and the proposed Savage II Reservoir. The map illustrates forest management zones, recreation areas, and water resource planning, reflecting mid-century conservation and land-use strategies.

The reverse side focuses on the rugged highland region of eastern West Virginia, including Spruce Knob—the highest point in the state—and the dramatic Seneca Rocks formation. Surrounding areas such as Circleville, Petersburg, and key roadways like US 33 are shown, along with extensive national forest lands and recreation zones.

Both sides emphasize outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, scenic drives, and nature study. Detailed legends outline land classifications such as national forest boundaries, recreation complexes, backwoods management zones, and proposed infrastructure like scenic highways and trails.

The design showcases the distinctive graphic style of 1960s cartography, with layered green tones, bold red and black linework, and clean typographic elements that blend geographic detail with planning concepts.

This is an authentic vintage 1966 printing and not a reproduction. It retains its original character with light, age-appropriate wear.
