Vintage Fred & Marilyn Buss Maple Burl Puzzle Box
A beautiful vintage sculptural maple burl box by American woodworkers Fred & Marilyn Buss, circa 1970s.
Carved from richly figured maple burl, the box has an organic, flowing form designed around the natural character of the wood. The smooth polished surface highlights the swirling burl grain, while a portion of the original rugged burl edge has been intentionally preserved at one end.
Open carved spaces along the bottom are incorporated into the sculptural design, giving the substantial piece a surprisingly light, flowing appearance.
The underside is marked “Maple Burl” alongside the distinctive Fred & Marilyn Buss maker's mark.
Fred and Marilyn Buss are known for their sculptural handcrafted wooden boxes, particularly pieces incorporating burl and other highly figured woods. Their work combines functional storage with the organic forms associated with American studio craft of the period.
